There's a lot I could address here. I could point out that Baltimore seems to bring its A-game against the Sox, but lets the Yankees take batting practice. I could mention that the Orioles' response to the Lopez hat incident was to get an octogenarian banned from the Red Sox dugout. I could mention that the Orioles' owner is blackmailing MLB into paying for revenues they lose to the DC Expos, setting a precedent that will probably ensure baseball never goes to Portland or San Jose. I could even point out that the Yankees spent $183 million, and the Red Sox were indeed second, but with $58 million less payroll (which would buy the Orioles plus Jorge Posada.)
Instead, I will just say that rooting for the Yankees is like rooting for the school bully, for the casino, for Microsoft, for the cop in traffic court. Yes, it's a safer bet. But at what cost?
Well, as an Orioles fan, I also can't complain about the spending because the O's tried to do it in the early-mid 90s. I also don't like Peter Angelos. I LOVE that there's a team in DC.
And you're right - you don't want to root for the cop in traffic court or the casino, but neither do you want to root for the asshole who was street racing or Phil Helmuth.
