Burn Bollywood Burn!

So last afternoon-stretching-into-evening (because it just took that long), I saw Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehne -- which apparently means Never Say Good-bye. It's unlike a lot of other Hindi movies I've seen because it deals with a taboo subject -- divorce -- and even seems to advocate it. And, on another level, it advocates the idea of looking for a true love without worrying about one's situation in life. This latter notion is now much more widely prescribed to, but still sort of new, in India.

I have some critiques of it, but my real reason for writing about it isn't to give you my review.

Rather, I just wanted an excuse to post a picture of Priety Zinta, one of the film's stars. Zow!

Maybe not so much in this pic, but she looks exactly like the Indian Drew Barrymore.

Let us hope then she does not marry Pakistan's Tom Green.

Or Lindian Lohan (although presumably less trashy and awful).

The movie itself is easily my favorite Indian movie I've ever seen. I had a long discussion about it with my friend because a lot of them (Hindi movies) are kind of silly, or have silly elements to them. This one was much more "realistic." And the answer to "what is the right behavior" for some of the characters isn't obvious. SRK and Rani's characters act "morally wrong" but it's not clear if it really is wrong. And, even though Rani Mukharjee's (sp?) character is probably the one with the "worst" reason to do what she does, ultimately I empathized with her the most and felt horribly sad for her (for a variety of reasons).

I really liked it a lot.
